Sadness is a universal emotion that no one is immune from, everyone in the world feels sad in some way or another on a daily basis for various reasons. Depression is a feeling of sadness for continuously long periods of time. It can occur to young and old, boy or a girl.
The most common symptoms of depression in children are irritability, sadness, less involvement in the activities or games to enjoy. This is the mental illness that must be addressed properly. School going children usually become irritant to every person including parents and friends. The communication of the children with us depends upon the behavior of the parents, careers, and teachers.
In children ages 3 through 5, the most common emotional signs of depression are sadness, a detached or faraway look, displays of anger and aggression, a timid or fearful appearance, shyness, a spacey look, moodiness and irritability.
A change in appetite is common among children who are experiencing rejection. If they are suddenly without an appetite or overindulging themselves then they may be attempting to make themselves feel better by not eating or eating excessively.
Depressed children may suddenly become disinterested in activities or things that they once enjoyed. They may show unusual preoccupation with morbid things, such as death or dying. They may engage in risk taking behaviors, and may be prone to accidents and injuries.
Depression is manifested by each child differently. Depression in children should be dealt with great care as they are not very good at express themselves in words. The first thing you should do is to have a talk with your child. Make sure you are a friend to your child, so if he has a problem he can come and confide in you. Don't be a parent your child is scared of - be a parent your child finds comfort in.
